Since nobody else will say it

Almost all coffee sold in and from India comes from the same farms and the same sources. The only real difference is the brand on the bag and the way it was processed.

India’s coffee belt is small and well mapped. The estates that supply the big names supply everyone else too. So we’d rather compete on grading, cleanliness, honest pricing and turnaround than on a story about a hidden valley nobody can find on a map.

Arabica or Robusta?

Two different plants, not two quality tiers. Arabica is the delicate one that grows high and slow; Robusta is the strong one that grows low and fast. Neither is “better”, they do different jobs behind a bar. India grows both, roughly 60% Robusta to 40% Arabica.

Why It’s Called “Cherry” And “Plantation”

India names its green coffee after how it was processed, not where it grew. This trips up nearly every first-time buyer, so here it is plainly.

Cherry

Natural / dry processed

The whole fruit is sun-dried on the bean before hulling. Sweeter, heavier, fruitier, more rustic. It applies to both species, hence Arabica Cherry and Robusta Cherry.

Plantation

Washed Arabica

Fruit is pulped off and the bean fermented and washed before drying. Cleaner, brighter, more consistent cup. In India, washed Arabica is simply called Plantation, which has nothing to do with the estate it came from.

Parchment

Washed Robusta

The same washed route applied to Robusta. Softer and cleaner than Robusta Cherry. Listed here for completeness: we trade Robusta mainly as Cherry.

What The Grades Actually Mean

A, AA, AB, B, C are bean sizes, not taste scores. Green beans are dropped through sieves with round holes; the grade is the sieve that held them back. Bigger, more uniform beans roast more evenly and hold heat better, which is why they cost more, but a well-picked B can out-cup a careless AA.

Grade
Screen
Min. size
What it is
AA
18/64″
7.10 mm
Bold, large, very uniform. The premium size grade.
A
17/64″
6.65 mm
Large and even. The everyday premium workhorse.
AB
16/64″
6.00 mm
A and B combined, the most traded size in India.
B
15/64″
5.50 mm
Medium bean, wider tolerance. Strong value in blends.
C
13/64″
5.00 mm
Small bean, commercial grade. Volume and instant.

Indian grading also caps defects, peaberry percentage and moisture at each grade. Exact retention and defect tolerances are confirmed per lot on the spec sheet issued with every quote.

The Catalogue

Three Categories. Thirteen Grades.

Everything below is Indian origin, green and unroasted, supplied to roasters, importers, cafés and home roasters. Pick a category, pick a screen size, tell us the quantity.

Arabica dried whole inside its fruit. The sugars in the pulp carry into the bean, giving a sweeter, fuller, fruit-forward cup with low acidity. India's classic natural: big body, easy drinking, forgiving on a busy bar.

India Origin

Where It Comes From

Everything we trade is grown in India’s southern coffee belt, a narrow run of hills across three states, picked by hand and dried on estate yards.

Karnataka

Chikmagalur, Kodagu, Hassan. The bulk of the country's crop, both species.

Kerala

Wayanad and Travancore. Predominantly Robusta, grown low and warm.

Tamil Nadu

Nilgiris, Shevaroys, Pulneys. High-elevation Arabica.

Shade-grown

Indian coffee grows under a two-tier canopy alongside pepper, cardamom and areca. It is one of the few origins where shade is the norm rather than a premium claim.

Harvest window

Arabica picks November to January. Robusta follows, December to February. Fresh-crop green lands with us shortly after.

Why it cups the way it does

Monsoon rain, canopy shade and spice intercropping give Indian coffee its low acidity, heavy body and the faint spice note buyers recognise blind.
